UK dependant visa tier 4 , Student Family Visa UK, Partner visa UK, UK, dependent visa UK or in whatever language you call it. Bringing your family to the UK as a student is possible and realistic.
If you’re going to the UK to study, you might want to bring your family along via UK dependant visa tier 4 or student family visa UK route. Certain students are allowed to bring family members as dependants to the UK. This page contains information that you will need before to applying, as well as information about family members that may visit you.
Can I bring dependant with me to the UK?
You can bring dependants to the UK before you apply if:
- a full-time student on a postgraduate level course (RQF level 7 or above) that lasts 9 months or longer
- You are a government-sponsored student enrolled in a full-time program lasting more than six months; or you are a government-sponsored student enrolled in a full-time program lasting more than six months.
- You are a postgraduate student enrolled in a nine-month or longer full-time program.
Dependants are not permitted for undergraduate students who are not funded by the government or who are enrolled in a program lasting less than six months.
There are some extremely particular circumstances in which your child may be eligible to file as a dependent on your behalf. For additional information about these, please read on.
Who is qualified as my dependants?
You are allowed to bring the following people to the UK as dependants:
- Your partner
- You and your civil partner
- Your unmarried companion (provided you have been living together for at least 2 consecutive years)
- Children of yours
Other family members, such as your parents or siblings, are not permitted to accompany you to the United Kingdom as dependants.

Children born in the UK
Even if your kid is born in the United Kingdom, he or she does not have automatic British citizenship rights. He or she must have a British citizen or settled status in the UK to be considered a British national.
While your kid is in the UK, he or she will not require a visa. They will, however, require a visa to re-enter the UK if they travel outside the country.
You may be charged for any NHS treatment your kid receives in other parts of the UK if they are more than 3 months old and you travel outside of Scotland with them before they acquire a visa.
Can my dependant work full time in the UK?
Any dependants over the age of 16 will be permitted to work full time in the United Kingdom. There are no limitations on the type of work they can do, except for the following:
- There is no work experience as a doctor or dentist in training.
- There will be no work as a professional athlete or coach.
Student route dependents have no limits on their ability to study. If you are a dependant who wishes to study in the United Kingdom, you should be aware that if you are enrolled in a program that requires ATAS clearance, you must first obtain an ATAS certificate before beginning your studies.
Is the dependent subject to any other conditions?
Dependents have no access to public finances, which means they are unable to collect state benefits such as unemployment compensation or housing assistance.
Certain nationalities must register with the police if they hold a visa that is valid for longer than six months.
When should my dependent submit an application?
Your dependents must either apply at the same time as you or wait until your new leave has been granted if you are applying to extend or switch your Student visa in the UK. They must also apply before the expiration of their present visa.
Please note that your dependent will not be eligible to apply from the UK if they have immigration permission in one of the following categories:
- Standard Visitor
- Short-term Student
- Parent of a Child Student;
- Seasonal Worker
- Domestic Worker in a Private Household
- Leave outside the Immigration Rules
What Documents are required?
- Valid passport
- Your Biometric Residence Permit(BRP)
- Financial Requirements. Use our living expenses calculator to find out how much you and your dependants need to put in bank for 28 days.
- Your CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance)
- Evidence of relationship: e.g marriage certificate, a copy of your child’s birth certificate
- Tuberculosis(TB test)

If your dependent has immigration authorization in one of the categories listed above, or is on immigration bail, they must leave the UK and file their application from their home country.
How to Get Started
Both you and your child must apply online. Either they must:
- apply to become a partner
- submit an application as a child
They’ll need your application number, which you’ll receive when you submit your application. A Global Web Form (GWF) or a Unique Application Number is the name given to this number (UAN). It’ll be on your application’s emails and letters from the Home Office.
They’ll be invited to arrange an appointment at a UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services (UKVCAS) service point to present their biometric details as part of their application (fingerprints and a photo).
They’ll also have to provide supporting documentation. They are able to:
uploading them to a web-based service
at their UKVCAS appointment, have them scanned
Family members visiting you
Many of my students do ask me if their girlfriend can visit them? the answer is YES.
While you’re in the UK, your family members (including those who aren’t eligible for a dependant visa) can visit you for a limited time. They must submit an online application for a Standard Visitor visa.

UK student dependent visa new rules
The proof of fund money must be with you (or your partner or child) for at least 28 days. The 28-day term must finish within 31 days of the date they submit their visa application.
