WHY STUDY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICHESTER?
The University of Chichester thinks that having students and staff from many different places makes the university better. Higher education should be open to everyone who has the ability and potential to benefit from it, regardless of age, ethnicity, disability, or family background. From the university experience, it is known that a school with a lot of different kinds of students is a lively and successful place.
THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICHESTER HISTORY
The University of Chichester can trace its origins back to 1839.
In the early 19th century, people talked a lot about the relationship between church and state in higher education. In 1828, University College London, which later changed its name, became the first secular university in the country. In response, it was thought that London needed another academic setting where the church’s role could be officially recognised. William Otter was the first principal of King’s College London when it opened in 1829.
When he became the Bishop of Chichester in 1836, William Otter worked hard to improve education. As a tribute to him after his death in April 1839, a college was set up to train teachers. Bishop’s Training College finally moved to its new location in October 1850, where it was given the name Bishop Otter College. The university’s historic core on the Chichester campus is comprised of these structures. A campaign by Louisa Hubbard to promote the acceptance of women as teachers led to the college becoming a training college for women in 1873.
Male students were not introduced until 1957. The RAF took over Bishop Otter College in 1942 when the college’s students and staff were evacuated during World War II to Stockwell College in Bromley. Chichester was a key player in the 1944 D-Day landings, as one of the lecture halls on the Bishop Otter campus served as RAF Tangmere’s Operations Room, the command centre for the fighter squadrons that participated in the D-Day landing.
After the war, there was a big need for teachers, so in 1946, the Bognor Regis College of Education was set up as a place for both men and women to get training quickly. It was positioned between three stunning Regency homes in a crescent. Bishop Otter College and the Bognor Regis College of Education merged to form the West Sussex Institute of Higher Education in 1977. As a single institution of higher learning, it allowed the two colleges to keep some of their traditions and identities.
Initially, Sussex and Southampton Universities granted degrees, but the Institute switched to the Council for National Academic Awards (CNAA), which only granted Southampton degrees after the Council’s demise. Since then, the Institute has been an accredited college of the University of Southampton. The institute changed its name to Chichester Institute of Higher Education in 1995 to reflect its unified identity and strategic location. The institute was renamed University College Chichester in 1999 after gaining the authority to grant degrees on its own. The Privy Council approved the name “University of Chichester” on October 12, 2005.
ACCOMMODATION
On Campus
Both the University of Chichester campuses have on-site accommodations, which cuts down on the journey time and means you have everything in one place. Some people really like this option for its convenience. Most of the university’s on-site accommodation is catered, which means that as part of your rent, you get a daily allowance to spend on cooked food in the university’s on-site restaurants.
Off Campus
The University of Chichester has a range of off-site accommodation in Chichester city, these are mainly larger student villages in the heart of the city and near conveniences like supermarkets, restaurants, and entertainment. All are within a 30-minute walk of Chichester campus through the picturesque pedestrian-only centre. These are all self-catered, so they come with a fully furnished kitchen and communal chill out areas. Some of these have buses to campus, and others have connections to the Bognor campus .
Ensuite
These are more expensive, but these rooms come with your own bathroom—a toilet, sink, and shower. Shared bathroom You will share a shower and toilet block with your flatmates. There are multiple toilets and showers per flat.
Catered
All the university on-campus accommodations at Bognor and most of the on-campus accommodations at Chichester are catered. In catered accommodation, your rent includes a daily allowance that you can spend at any of the restaurants on either campus. During the week, you can use your allowance at Otters Restaurant or Costa at either campus.
On both campuses, Costa provides brunch catering on the weekends. A brunch service is provided during Reading Weeks; no catering service is provided during the Easter and Christmas vacations. There are also communal kitchen facilities available in all halls, should you wish to use them at any time.
Self Catered
In self-catered accommodation, you can cook for yourself in the communal kitchens. Each kitchen has a hob, oven, microwave, refrigerator, freezer, kettle, and toaster. No cooking or eating equipment or utensils are provided, so you will need to bring your own.
Quiet Block
Although many students enjoy the social aspect of university life, some prefer to be assigned a room in a quiet block. If this is something that appeals to you, the University of Chichester do have rooms that cater to this requirement at Fishbourne Road East.
Adapted Rooms
The University of Chichester has a range of adapted rooms for students with disabilities. Most are single rooms with large ensuite wet rooms that can be catered or self-catered. The university is happy to discuss individual housing requirements and would encourage you to contact the Disability and Dyslexia Services at an early stage. This will enable the university to allocate accommodations to suit your needs.
Additional helpful details
All shared facilities will be shared between no more than seven people. In some of the blocks, you may only be sharing with four other people. Due to a lack of parking facilities, the university is unable to offer parking to students living on campus. If you are allocated accommodation off campus, you may be able to purchase a designated parking permit. Residents at Fishbourne Road East or Stockbridge are not permitted to bring a car into the city due to planning.

Campus security: Monday to Friday, 4.30 p.m. to 6 a.m., and 24 hours at weekends. Transport Each campus has its own character, but both are no more than a fifteen minute walk from the respective city or town centres, and both are close to local parks, offering plenty of green space in which to relax or socialise. The U8 bus travels between Chichester and Bognor Regis, calling at both campuses.
FACILITIES
Since 2016, the University of Chichester has spent more than £42 million on buildings, equipment, and land on both campuses. In the last five years, the university has added a large multi-purpose sports dome, student support facilities, a new library, music block, and academic building.
September 2018 saw the official royal opening of our Tech Park, a state-of-the-art engineering and creative & digital technology facility that cost £35 million.
