How to Apply for a UK Student Visa from Nigeria (Step-by-Step)

The UK continues to be one of the most popular study destinations for Nigerian students. With its 1-year Master’s programs, post-study work visa, and high-quality universities, it's no surprise.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the complete UK student visa process — from your admission offer to visa approval.

📌 Step 1: Secure an Unconditional Offer from a UK University

You must first apply and get accepted into a licensed UK institution. Most universities will issue a conditional offer first, then an unconditional offer once you meet the requirements (like transcript, CV, SOP, etc.).

📩 Step 2: Receive Your CAS Letter

CAS stands for Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies. It’s a unique number issued by your university, confirming they’ve offered you a place. You can’t apply for a visa without this.

💳 Step 3: Pay Your IHS Fee

IHS stands for Immigration Health Surcharge. This gives you access to the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) during your study. The cost is approximately £776/year for students.

🧾 Step 4: Prepare Your Financial Documents

The UK student visa (Tier 4) requires you to show that you have:

  • Tuition fee (minus deposit already paid)
  • Living expenses — £1,334/month for 9 months (outside London) or £1,023/month (inside London)
  • Money must be held for at least 28 consecutive days

You can use a parent or sponsor’s account, but you’ll need a sponsorship letter and proof of relationship.

📝 Step 5: Apply for the Student Visa Online

Go to the UK Government visa portal and fill the online form. You’ll upload documents, pay the visa fee (~£490), and book a biometrics appointment at the TLS Contact center.

📸 Step 6: Attend Biometrics & Interview (if required)

At the biometrics center (TLS Ikeja or Abuja), your photo and fingerprints will be taken. Some students will be invited for a credibility interview — this is where preparation is key.

They’ll ask questions like:

  • Why did you choose this course and university?
  • Who is sponsoring you?
  • What are your career plans after graduation?

Tip: Be confident, honest, and consistent with your documents.

⏳ Step 7: Wait for Your Visa Decision

The standard processing time is about 3 weeks. You can pay extra for Priority (5 working days) or Super Priority (24 hours) service.

Once approved, you’ll get a decision email, then your visa vignette will be stamped in your passport.

🎓 Bonus: What Happens After Visa Approval?

You’ll get a short-term visa to enter the UK. Your full visa (BRP card) will be collected once you arrive. You can now prepare for your flight, accommodation, and life in the UK!

Remember, you can work part-time (20 hours/week) during term and full-time during breaks.
