THE UNIVERSITY FOR THE CREATIVE ARTS’ HISTORY
When the Kent Institute of Art and Design merged into the Surrey Institute of Art and Design, which already had degree-granting status, it was created in 2005 as the University College for the Creative Arts at Canterbury, Epsom, Farnham, Maidstone, and Rochester. The local art schools in Kent and Surrey came together to form both constituent schools. In 2008, it received university status, and the current name was adopted.
It joined the Open College of the Arts in 2016. The number of modest art schools that were founded in the nineteenth century in the English counties of Surrey and Kent is where the University for the Creative Arts got its start. The first of these was established in Kent in 1867 at Maidstone College of Art and in Surrey in 1856 at Guildford School of Art. Many of these small art schools merged during the second half of the 20th century, resulting in the establishment of the Surrey Institute of Art and Design in 1995 and the Kent Institute of Art and Design in 1987.
In order to form the University College for the Creative Arts at Canterbury, Epsom, Farnham, Maidstone, and Rochester, these two organisations merged in 2005. The Privy Council granted full university status to the University College for Creative Arts in May 2008. It then officially changed its name to the University for the Creative Arts in September 2008. The University for the Creative Arts was revealed to be the fourth most cut university in England with a cut of 7.8% (10.2% in real terms) after the election of a Coalition government.
The Department for Business Innovation and Skills also introduced legislation to increase tuition fees while decreasing government spending on higher education in real terms. The University for the Creative Arts announced in February 2011 that it was thinking about letting MidKent College use a portion of its Maidstone campus. In addition, MidKent College stated its willingness to purchase the Maidstone campus starting in 2012 and gradually phase out the University for the Creative Arts presence there in 2014.

CAMPUSES
University for the Creative Arts, Epsom campus UCA has campuses in Canterbury, Epsom, Farnham, and Rochester, together with teaching bases at the Royal School of Needlework and The Maidstone Studios, and a project and exhibition space in Folkestone Creative Quarter. It previously had a campus in Maidstone, which was closed in 2014.
The university also validates provision at or co-delivers courses with, a number of other educational institutions and arts organisations in the UK and overseas, including Farnham Maltings, Laine Theatre Arts, the London School of Design & Marketing, Millennium Performing Arts, Turner Contemporary, and the MIT Institute of Design. On November 1, 2016, the Open College of the Arts became part of UCA. This was built on a close working relationship established in 2010.
ACADEMIC LIFE
With about 6,000 students, the University for the Creative Arts (UCA) is the second-largest creative arts education provider in the UK. It offers courses in a huge variety of architecture, art, design, fashion, media, and performing arts subjects. Pre-degree, post-secondary, undergraduate, taught postgraduate, and doctoral levels of education all offer courses.
