COVENTRY UNIVERSITY 2023/2024
Coventry University is located in Coventry, England. A public research university. The Coventry School of Design was established in 1843, and this event is credited with establishing Coventry University. From 1970 to 1987, it was known as Lanchester Polytechnic and Coventry Polytechnic until 1992, when the Further and Higher Education Act granted it university status and the name was changed to Coventry University. The University of Warwick is the other university in the city, and Coventry is the bigger of the two.
As the fourth-largest university in the nation, it has the fastest rate of growth in the UK. It has two main campuses: one in the city center of Coventry, where the majority of its operations are based, and one in central London, where business and management programs are concentrated. As an “alternative to mainstream higher education,” Coventry also oversees the Coventry University Coventry, Coventry University Scarborough, and Coventry University London institutions of higher learning.
Its four faculties, which are composed of schools and departments, offer about 300 undergraduate and graduate courses. There are 11 research centers spread throughout the university, each specializing in a different area, such as agro ecology, peace studies, or the future of transportation. The institution’s annual revenue for 2021–22 was £447.3 million, of which £15.8 million came from grants and contracts for research. Its annual expenditure was £463.4 million.
The institution received a gold rating from the 2017 Teaching Excellence Framework. Coventry is a part of the mission team for the University Alliance.
HISTORY
The Coventry School of Design was established in 1843, which is where Coventry University got its start. As part of the Education Act of 1902, the name of the Coventry School of Art was changed to the Municipal Art School. In the 1950s, it underwent one last name change and was renamed the College of Art. The building of a new institution started in the late 1950s to address the demand for highly technical training that the Coventry Technical College (now City College Coventry) was unable to meet.
The Lanchester College of Technology was founded in 1961 and took its name from Frederick Lanchester, a car engineer, and a couple of others. In February 1971, Margaret Thatcher, who was the education secretary at the time, gave the school its name. The name of the institution, Lancaster,” made it hard to find. It was often confused with both Lanchester and Manchester, as shown by the fact that none of the contestants on the BBC Radio 4 show “Brain of Britain” could correctly say where it was.
In response to the Birmingham pub bombings, the polytechnic postponed its graduation ceremony out of concern that public gatherings might be targeted; the ceremony was eventually held in 2009, 35 years later. Lanchester Polytechnic was renamed “Coventry Polytechnic” in 1987, and Coventry University was created the following year after the Further and Higher Education Act of 1992 granted the institution university status. In order to increase the university’s appeal to international students, a campus was opened in London in 2010.
In 2012, “Coventry University College” was established on the main campus of the university, providing degrees and other qualifications at a lower price than customary university tuition. As of 2017, Coventry is the best-ranked modern university in the UK, according to both the Complete University Guide and the Guardian University Guide, where it is ranked 12th overall. Additionally, it ranks among the top 200 universities worldwide among those that are 50 years old or younger in the 2017 edition of the Times Higher Education Young University Rankings.
Margaret Casely-Hayford was named the university’s new chancellor in July 2017 to succeed Sir John Egan. The campus in Coventry is undergoing a £430 million investment programme for the years up to 2022; the development plan’s focal points are a new £37 million science and health building and a £73 million student housing complex, which were opened in 2017 and 2018, respectively.
The 22-acre farm Ryton Organic Gardens was purchased by Coventry in September 2019 from the nonprofit Garden Organic, which continues to occupy the property as a tenant, along with the Heritage Seed Library and a community supported agriculture (CSA) programme called “5-Acre CSA,” which is situated next to the university’s own Centre for Agroecology, Water, and Resilience.
CAMPUSES
Coventry is now in Coventry City Centre, on a 33-acre campus that was built for that purpose and is close to the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum. It is housed in a mix of new buildings built for specific purposes, renovated buildings, and buildings that used to be part of institutions that came before it. The Hub, a building that won a prize and opened in August 2011, is the centre of the campus. In The Hub, you can find the Coventry University Students’ Union, student support services, a bar/nightclub, a food hall, and Sodexo-run restaurants.
A new £55 million engineering building with amenities like a full-scale Harrier jump jet, a wind tunnel, and flight simulators was unveiled in September 2012. The Hub received an “excellent” BREEAM rating, and together, sustainable features like a biomass boiler, a green roof, and grey water harvesting are present in both the hub and the engineering building. After the buildings open, the campus will get a £160 million makeover over the next 15 years. The £20 million Coventry library, which is outside the campus, opened its doors in 2000.
It has more than 2,000 print periodicals, 350,000 monographs, and over 6,000 video, audio, and film items. It was formally opened by Princess Anne in September 2001. The library’s interior design has won awards, and it is distinguished by its distinctive turreted exterior, which includes a light distribution system to maximize natural light throughout the building. On the campus, there are two converted buildings.
The Coventry Business School is housed in a former car engine factory constructed in 1910 that is right next to the university library, and the School of Media and Performing Arts, which is currently a part of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities but was formerly a part of the Coventry School of Art and Design, is located in a theatre constructed in 1880 on Jordan Well. Coventry University Enterprises Limited, a commercial subsidiary of the university, owns the 20-acre Coventry University Technology Park, a business park where several of the university’s commercial subsidiary operations offer business services to local and national organisations.
This business park is located to the south of the main campus. The university supports small businesses that rent space in the park and grants them access to its library. The park is also home to conference facilities at the Techno Centre building, the Coventry and Warwickshire New Technology Institute, which works with companies to address skills shortages in ICT and advanced technology, and a digital lab for serious game and other technology development. Buildings in Coventry are named after individuals or groups that have had a significant local or regional impact as part of a city-wide policy.
Armstrong Siddeley, a former Coventry-based automaker; Ellen Terry, a Shakespearean actress; Frederick Lanchester, a Coventry-based automotive pioneer; George Eliot, a Victorian author, critic, and poet; James Starley, the founder of the bicycle industry (building to be demolished in early 2020); Richard Crossman, a former Coventry East MP; Graham Sutherland, an artist; and William Morris, the man who founded Morris Motors, an automaker. A former RAF Harrier T.4 aircraft with the tail number XW270 is housed in the faculty of engineering, environment, and computing and is used as a teaching tool.
COVENTRY UNIVERSITY, COVENTRY.
A branch of Coventry University, CU Coventry, was established on campus in 2012. It offers full-time and part-time professional courses in fields like marketing, law, and accounting. Although CU Coventry is separate from the university and has its own personnel and resources, the university validates and confers degrees on its programmes.
Since the institution’s course offerings are flexible, tuition costs frequently fall below the maximum of £16,000 that UK universities may charge for full-time courses. Classes may be held at unusual times, such as evenings and weekends, due to the part-time nature of many of the courses offered.
COVENTRY UNIVERSITY, LONDON.
In 2017, CU London opened a new campus in Dagenham, East London, with a range of full-time and part-time courses. The campus is in the building that used to be the Dagenham Civic Center. It focuses on “high-quality, low-cost, career-focused” education that can be arranged to fit around the lives of students.
To make college more accessible, CU London has given over £95,000 in bursaries and scholarships to students and schools in the London boroughs of Barking and Dagenham. Since November 2020, CU London has also been operating out of a new campus on the Greenwich Peninsula at 6 Mitre Passage. This was set up to cater to students of the former Greenwich School of Management, following its closure, as well as to new enrolments.
COVENTRY UNIVERSITY, SCARBOROUGH.
In 2016, the university opened CU Scarborough in the North Yorkshire town of Scarborough. It was a new building that was part of a £45 million project in the Weapons Street neighbourhood of Scarborough. The project received a £12 million contribution from the university. There are classes in law, science, and engineering. A new sports and recreation village and the University Technical College (UTC), both for students between the ages of 14 and 18, are also included on the site.
Coventry University, London campus
Coventry University’s London campus opened in 2010, following a trend seen at a number of British universities where a campus in London with mostly international students was set up to improve the universities’ reputations abroad. The campus is run out of University House, which is at 109–117 Middlesex Street in the City of London, about 100 miles southeast of Coventry.
Coventry University, Wroclaw campus
Coventry University Wroclaw is a campus that opened in September 2020 and offers English-taught courses in IT, cyber security, business, and aviation management, with more courses coming in 2023. The university plans to accept 160 students in its first year. It is the first foreign university in Poland and will offer student exchange programmes with Coventry University’s UK campuses.
ACADEMICAL LIFE
Over its four faculties, Coventry offers more than 130 undergraduate degrees and 100 postgraduate degrees, as well as credentials like foundation degrees and Higher National Diplomas (HNDs). In addition to teaching parapsychology and health journalism to graduate students, it was the first place in the UK to teach disaster management to undergraduates. 38,430 students attended the university in 2019–20, including 31,645 undergraduates and 6,785 postgraduates.
In 2013–14, 39% of postgraduate students and 15% of undergraduate students were part-time. First-year undergraduate dropout rates are 8.9%, and 97% of new students come from state-run institutions. The university is the fourth largest employer in Coventry, with over 1,800 academic staff members.

Accommodation
The university and private companies both offer housing for students. Priory Hall, Quadrant Hall, Singer Hall, and 72A Margaret Road are among the four buildings that Coventry owns. It also owns a number of properties throughout the city, primarily in the Earlsdon area. Additionally, it oversees four facilities: Pillar Box, Apollo House, Lynden House, and Radford Road, the latter of which is only for graduate students.
Trinity Point, Paradise Place, Sherbourne House, Callice Court, and Raglan House are a few of the facilities that Coventry has access to, thanks to collaborations with private businesses like Unite, Liberty Living, and Derwent Living. Liberty Park, which is shared with the University of Warwick, is another. In the fall of 2010, two new housing facilities opened in the city’s Trinity Street and Market Way, and two more along Corporation Street and Greyfriars Lane the following year.
These facilities are shared with the University of Warwick. In April 2013, it was announced that there would be additional plans to increase the amount of student housing available in Coventry’s downtown. These plans included the anticipated conversion of the former Hotel Leofric. The university can accommodate 3,579 students in total.
Coventry University Students’ Union
The Coventry University Students’ Union (CUSU) is a registered charity that serves as a voice for and advocacy group for the university’s students. It has a number of membership services, including supporting over 100 sports clubs and societies, a free advice centre, and a volunteering department. Its headquarters are in The Hub. In spite of opposition from a competing nightclub, CUSU owns and operates an independent nightclub on Far Gosford Street that opened in November 2012.
The athletic department of Coventry University is represented by Team Phoenix in five sports. Every year, Coventry and the University of Warwick engage in a number of official and unofficial varsity matches across a variety of sports. Through its Phoenix Racing team, Coventry competes in Formula Student, placing 42nd out of 102 competitors in 2012 and taking home the prize for the most fuel-efficient vehicle in 2011.
