THE UNIVERSITY OF PORTSMOUTH 2023/2024

In Portsmouth, England, there is a public university called the University of Portsmouth. The government’s Teaching Excellence Framework awarded it a gold rating, making it one of only four universities in the south east of England. The university ranks 25th in the United Kingdom for higher education student enrollment with roughly 28,280 undergraduate and graduate students.

The university, which has five faculties, 24 schools, and a number of other services, employs about 3,500 staff. The university was ranked 62nd out of 132 universities in the United Kingdom in the 2023 edition of the Good University Guide, which was put together by The Times and Sunday Times. The university was ranked third in terms of research power among contemporary post-1992 universities in the Times Higher Education REF ranking.

The university’s research has a significant impact on society, health, culture, and the environment. According to the most recent edition of the Research Excellence Framework, 77% of the university’s submitted research was rated as world-leading or internationally excellent.

STUDENT LIFE

All students at the University of Portsmouth (UoP) are automatically members of the University of Portsmouth Students’ Union (UPSU), a registered charity that helps and speaks for them. The Students’ Union speaks up for its members in different ways at the university, in the community, and beyond. It also gives its members support services and chances to grow.

In the September 1911 issue of The Galleon, a student newspaper, the Union was mentioned for the first time. Since 1965, the Union has called Union House on St. Pauls Road home. It relocated to Alexandra House, the former NAAFI building, in 1983, where it stayed for 19 years. The union has been located in the northern part of Ravelin Park since 2002. Lux and Co2, two nightclubs that once operated out of The Union, were demolished in 2009 to make way for new construction. The Union Advice Service provides private, unbiased, and nonjudgmental assistance.

The service offers students at the University of Portsmouth and affiliated institutions a variety of academic and non-academic information, advice, and guidance. In order to promote the health and wellbeing of students, the service also engages in other projects and occasions throughout the year. Next to Cafe Coco at The Union’s Gun House is where The Advice Service is located. According to the 2016 Natwest Student Living Index, Portsmouth is the most cost-effective city for students in the UK.

SOCIETIES AND SPORT TEAM

The Union supports more than 150 student-run organisations that give students extracurricular opportunities, such as sports clubs, societies, media organisations, and volunteer opportunities. The Union can assist students in starting new societies. The Athletic Union oversees the variety of sports clubs that the Students’ Union offers.

The sports include octopush (underwater hockey), lacrosse, polo, and pole dancing in addition to more traditional team sports like athletics, football, cricket, rugby union, netball, trampolining, and table tennis. There are 38 different sports clubs as of October 2020. Numerous volunteer programmes are run by the Students’ Union, including HEFCE’s Volunteer Team of the Year. The Union received a £15,000 grant in 2010 to assist the city’s senior citizens.

Student-produced media

There are two active student media outlets at the university. Student publications like Spyglass and Pure FM, a student radio station that collaborates with regional radio stations like Express FM, are available. The Galleon, a newspaper that was once active at the university, as well as Victory Studios, a group that produced videos, both no longer exist.

WHEN AND HOW DO I APPLY TO THE UNIVERSITY OF PORTSMOUTH 2023/2024?

To apply, visit this page, send your document, and we will submit and monitor the processing of your application. We have a partnership deal with the University of Portsmouth. The application is free. You will have to fill out the form yourself and go through the rigorous process of submitting it and mailing it to the school for an update, and you may make a mistake if you do it yourself.

Universities send updates to agents about admission requirements and document formats on a regular basis. And these updates don’t always make it to their website. This means you may not have up-to-date information about the SOP format, the number of reference letters required, whether a bank statement is required for CAS, and so on.

HISTORY

The Portsmouth and Gosport School of Science and Art, which opened in 1870 and was subscription-funded, serves as the foundation of the university. Later, the local government took over technical education, which included science classes. To do this, they set up the Portsmouth Municipal Technical Institute in 1894. But the city needed a dedicated, long-term location for technical education, so Portsmouth Municipal College was built on land behind Portsmouth Guildhall.

When it first opened in 1908, the Portsmouth Municipal College building also housed the College of Art, the Portsmouth Day Training College for teachers, and a public library. Portsmouth Municipal College replaced Portsmouth Municipal Technical Institute, though many of the staff members moved to the new college. The University of Portsmouth is still using the original college building. It is now called the Park Building.

Early records from The Galleon, the student union newspaper, show that there were separate student unions for male and female students in 1911. After World War II, there wasn’t as much need for engineers, so the college added more arts and humanities classes to its schedule between 1945 and 1960. The institution’s name was changed to Portsmouth College of Technology in 1953.

After obtaining polytechnic status in 1969, the college was renamed Portsmouth Polytechnic, and by the late 1980s, it was one of the biggest polytechnics in the UK. A ceremony honouring the University of Portsmouth’s founding was held at Portsmouth Guildhall on July 7, 1992. As a new institution, it was permitted by the Further and Higher Education Act of 1992 to validate its own degrees.

Portsmouth F.C. announced on Friday, May 4, 2018, that the University of Portsmouth would serve as the team’s primary shirt sponsor for the 2018–19, 2019–20, and 2020–21 seasons. An employment tribunal ruled in December 2022 that the university had discriminated against Dr. Kajal Sharma on the basis of race when it declined to reappoint her to her position.

CAMPUSES

The University Quarter, which is centred on the Portsmouth Guildhall neighbourhood, and the Langstone Campus make up the university.

The Langstone Campus

Langstone, the smaller of the two campuses, is in Milton, on the eastern shore of Portsea Island. The university’s athletic facilities are located on the campus, which has a view of Langstone Harbour.

The university’s School of Languages and Area Studies used to be on Langstone Campus, but it has since moved to the University Quarter’s Park Building. There used to be three residence halls there: Langstone Flats, Trust Hall, and Queen Elizabeth Queen Mother (QEQM). These were closed in favour of those that were closer to the majority of the university buildings and previously housed 565 students. These have already been destroyed.

The University Quarter

The University Quarter is a cluster of academic buildings that surrounds the city’s core. Except for the Langstone student village and two halls (Rees Hall and Burrell House) on Southsea Terrace, the majority of the university’s instructional facilities and residence halls are located in this area. At a cost of £11 million, the University Library (previously the Frewen Library) was expanded in 2006. P. D. James, a crime author, opened it.

The university has recently made investments in the Faculty of Science, particularly through renovations to St. Michael’s, whose main structure is covered in aluminium. In September 2006, “Creative and Cultural Industries,” a new faculty was established.

RANKING

The Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) gave the top gold rating to only four universities in the South East, one of which was the University of Portsmouth. In the 2022 edition of the Good University Guide, which The Times and Sunday Times put together, the university was most recently ranked 88 out of 132, near the bottom.

The university was ranked 98th globally in Times Higher Education’s 2017 list of the “100 under 50” international modern universities, but it did not appear on the list in any succeeding year. The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2022 put Portsmouth among the top 501–600 universities in the world.

RESEARCH

The university’s REF2014 submissions included more than 60% of the best work in the world, according to judges. In allied health professions like dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, and physics, 90% and 89% of all submitted research were judged to be world-leading and internationally excellent. In 2017, Steffen Lehmann and Alessandro Melis started an interdisciplinary project called CRUNCH: Climate Resilient Urban Nexus Choices: Operationalizing the Food-Water-Energy Nexus.

A research project that costs £1.6 million is being paid for by the ESRC, the Belmont Forum, Horizon 2020, and other groups. The project’s coordinator is the University of Portsmouth. Five universities from Miami, Eindhoven, Gdansk, Uppsala, and Taiwan are the partners. Universities, local governments, and small businesses are all involved in the crunch.
